Strategic Design is the next step in the evolution of design from industrial design (“Formgebung”) via branding (the differentiation of comparable products through stories) to the current design of interactions and services. As the frames of decision-making are getting wider and more complex, the need arises to redesign the very tools and processes of decision-making. Hence, design is now entering a phase of shaping these decisions – besides shaping form, brand or services.
Far beyond the design of solitary interventions and discrete objects, complex (so-called) “wicked” problems of our spatial environment necessitate long-term strategic processes on a grander scale. The smart interlinking of existing and new services, infrastructure as well as built and un-built local fabric can lead to innovative, dynamic developments with highly transformative potential.
